Persistence pays off

The readings for this week invite us to persist in the face of despair:

Luke 18:1-8 – Jesus tells the story of the woman being granted justice by an unjust judge through her persistence. It reminds us not to lose heart, but to persevere even if it feels like we’re just going through the motions.

Jeremiah 42:7-17 – The prophet Jeremiah reminds us that God puts himself in our hearts drawing us into a full relationship and imploring us to live out his truth of love and justice for all.

Greg wrote this powerful song as a response:

When darkness is around us

And we don’t know what to do

You tell us to keep coming to you

So when we don’t feel like praying

Like hope has gone away

…we come back

… and we pray

We do what you tell us

We bring these things to you

For those we love their health their hurts and fears

Each candle is a soul

Held without our hearts

Please hold them in your love

When darkness is around us

And we don’t know what to do

You tell us to keep coming to you

The world has so much hurting

So much is wrong

May we hold together, keep each other strong

Each candle burning here

Is hanging on to hope

Please don’t turn your face away

When darkness is around us

And we don’t know what to do

You tell us to keep coming to you

God of Jeremiah, grieving with aching heart

For an empire, unbelieving as it falls apart

Inspired by love and anger

Disturbed by need and pain

We ask you once again…

When darkness is around us

And we don’t know what to do

You tell us to keep coming to you

So when we don’t feel like praying

Like hope has gone away

…we come back

… and we pray
